The first I knew about this kind of thing was when I got my first listing in the yellow pages business phone directory and suddenly I got calls from companies wanting to pass on flower orders in my area.
I said no at the time but it was not because I knew of the problems involved. I now find out that many of these services pass on a £20 bouquet order,. charging the original customer £50 andthen it looks as though the local florist is poor value. I said no because I like to deal with the person ordering - otherwise how do you know whether the recipient would like a bunch of scented sweetpeas, something glamorous & blousy like paeonies, or a mixed herbaceous bunch. How do you know whether it is going to decorate a bedroom during convalescence or to be on display for a party? How do you know that they really really hate orange.
People usually give flowers because they mean something - that is what these any size fits all outfits don't seem to understand. At least with the internet it is more possiblke to do detective work and track down a living florist - even if there are distracting daleks along the way.

I was majorly inconvenienced by 1-800-FLOWERS and will never use that type of service again. I called the week before Valentine's Day and ordered this pretty 'lemonade bouqet' to deliver to my boyfriend's work. You see, he LOVES lemons. Almost as much as me probably hehe. The bouquet was absolutely perfect with the lemons stuck in the vase and in between all the flowers.

I made the order, the money was cashed and then I got a call at about 10am on Valentine's day while I was at work saying that they couldn't find a florist to create the bouquet. Why didn't they tell me earlier?!

So obviously I couldn't find anyone on my own on such short notice and had to take leave from work to make my own lemonade bouquet. It actually turned out quite well. I had assorted white flowers in a glass lemonade pitcher with lemons that a skewered on sticks to fit between the flowers. Boyfriend loved it.

But man, that was such a pain.

I don't know how I got lucky enough never to get entrapped by the 1-800-flowers crap... wait, yes I do. I have an absolute hatred of those ugly "Teleflora Bouquets." One size fits all, baby--just pick your theme and we'll manufacture you a clone of our generic bouquet for that and send it off. UGH!!!

Anyway, my favorite thing to use when I needed to find a local florist is to utilize Yahoo Yellow Pages. You type in the address of the person to whom you want to send flowers, and then search for local florists. You really do need to scroll down past the crappy "sponsored links" (generally the 1-800-flowers types) and it will give you the names of florists in order of proximity to the address. If I'm sending it to a hospital, someone in the hospital's main office can usually recommend a few local florists, too.

Of course, now that I've been reading Amy's posts about the inside scoop on the flower business... I'm not really in any hurry to call ANY florist ever again! Maybe I'll make handmade cards... or send organic chocolates... hmm....

Kim - Please don't give up on all florists - many are getting better. . .though those chocolates do sound good

I'm learning a lot about how the floral industry works, just from this blog. I am looking forward to reading your book, Amy. My next big flower order will be for Christmas... I will be approaching it differently this year!

Ideally, this is the pattern we should apply to all of our purchases, from flowers to funerals. Thank you for the fine illustration.

flowers to go

I think you just have to be sure on which flower retailers to trust, but if you're anywhere near Washington, I can recommend a great Port Orchard florist

Just looking around for information on order gatherers and came across your site. I found it ironic that you spent so much time looking for a local florist and yet your Ad Words are all order gathering sites. Let's encourage people to use these companies while you profit from the click. Shame, shame.
