You've inspired me!. I've got four rice straw bales (from 3 G's out by Almquist Lumber) ready for the compost layer and drip line. I'm going to try using the bale garden for salad greens this year. I'll probably post photos on my blog once it's set up and then when things sprout. You can get to my blog from my website.

Amy,
While I have never tried a straw bale garden, I do share in your woes about the whole gardening process. Still, I subject myself to the hard work every season. It's the harvest, the fruits of my labor, that keep me coming back for more. Wishing you lots of gardening success!

I understand it too, luckily my husband has the 'tomato bug' and he is taking over the edible stuff. I think the flowers have won my heart over.

Amy, Amy, Amy - just use castor oil in an open end sprayer and put it not just where the gophers are today, but where you think they might want to set up a new enterprise. In other words, send them off to your neighbor's yard. It works. Probably not as good as mothballs, but who needs benzene in the soil.

Hey Amy,

I am hooked on straw bale gardening. My tomatoes are coming in as I write, I am reading bales for a second mid season tomato. I also have gourds, squash, pole beans, cukes and peppers. I planted okra at the ends of the beds in the ground.

I am watering with a soaker hose as well as rain water I collect.

While my garden in small- I have harvested so far 8 cukes and 2 tomatoes( I have at least 25-30 that are ripening.)

I have my bales in left over raised beds i did last yr. I stacked them 2 high and they are holding in the bales as they decompose and reduce down.

I plan to freeze most of my harvest to enjoy this winter. Vist my blog for pics.

Good luck!
